Stutz Groupat Mt. Wilson

The Stutz research group and Stan Sander from JPL recently installed a multi-axis DOAS instrument at the new JPL observatory at Mt. Wilson. The MAX-DOAS system will remotely map pollutants, such as nitrogen dioxide and formaldehyde, in the Los Angeles Basin. The picture shows UCLA students and researchers on the roof of the observatory, together with the telescope module of the MAX-DOAS instrument.

Alex Hall

Alex Hall received a 2 year award from the UC Center for Water Resources for his project, "Simulating and Understanding Variability in Runoff from the Sierra Nevada." This project will be using an enhanced regional climate model - tailored to the problem of the Sierra snowpack - to simulate two contrasting snow seasons, one dry and one wet. They will then analyze the different variability in runoff, focusing on the ways in which the mountains shape snow distributions.  This work will establish a physical understanding of the Sierra runoff and create a validated simulation of Sierra runoff at the detailed level of individual watersheds. The award took effect on July 1 of 2007.  You can also check out Alex Hall's website.
