Christine Lee

Assistant Director, JIFRESSE

Dr. Christine M. Lee is a research scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the Water and Ecosystems Group, specializing in satellite remote sensing for coastal and inland water quality, environmental hazards, and marine ecosystem monitoring. Her research focuses on the land-water interface, utilizing thermal infrared and optical remote sensing to study post-fire impacts on water quality, sediment and nutrient fluxes, coral reef thermal stress, and coastal pollution tracking to support public health and ecosystem management.

Christine credits her commitment to advancing science for society to field research and service opportunities with Engineers Without Borders at UCLA that have taken her to Southern California, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Tanzania, Kenya, and Antarctica. She received her Ph.D. and M.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UCLA, where her dissertation focused on rapid microbial detection methods for tracking fecal pollution in urban watersheds, and her B.S. in Chemical Engineering from UCLA. Dr. Lee is a 2012 AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at NASA Headquarters in the Applied Sciences Program in Earth Science.  She has lead over 20 projects, managed NASA's Water Resources Program for 8 years as an associate program manager, and has mentored over 50 students and postdoctoral scholars. She has co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and is recipient of the 2019 NASA Early Career Public Achievement Medal.
